All of the characters who work on “the killing floor” in our film, both black and white, leapt out of the thousands of pages of testimony by a group of workers at the Wilson Meatpacking Company in June of 1919. So I ordered from the National Archives the entire transcript of the hearing in which the two testified. I was drawn to the complexity-the race riot was of course not just about black people vs. These two black men, who both worked on the killing floor of a Chicago slaughterhouse, were testifying before a white federal judge, and the two were entirely at odds with each other in how they viewed the causes of the mounting racism from which they were both suffering. In William Tuttle’s book about the Chicago Race Riot I happened upon a footnote in which I discovered the two main characters in The Killing Floor: Frank Custer and Heavy Williams. Meanwhile I had been hired at the public television station in Boston, WGBH, to work on the first seasons of the NOVA series, and I received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities to develop a public television series on the history of the American labor movement. I found it astounding that I had never learned about these stories in school or college. in 1972 and began reading more and more about the fascinating history of working people, who have played such an important role in our history, for which they have never been recognized. My first short films were on feminist themes, but I soon developed a passionate interest in untold stories of history. Following college in the U.S., I studied at the film academy in West Berlin, where people scoffed at the saying that “messages are for Western Union” and honored the work of politically committed artists like Berthold Brecht. Though my family was neither left-wing nor union, I’ve been drawn to the struggle for social justice ever since high school, when we engaged in sit-ins at Woolworth’s in my hometown, Denver, in protest against the firm’s segregationist policies in the South. How did you end up making an independent film about this important chapter in Chicago history? Tell me about your background as an artist and activist and the production company you founded that produced The Killing Floor. We spoke with Rassbach in advance of the screening. The screening will take place on July 27 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the riot and will be followed by a panel discussion with the film’s producer and co-writer Elsa Rassbach as well as community and labor activists. Upon arrival, he becomes involved in labor struggles involving a controversial and newly formed union, and eventually witnesses the notorious Race Riot of 1919. It’s an important history lesson, a compelling drama and a lovingly recreated period piece all rolled into one. The locally made film, which originally aired on PBS in 1984 before screening at prestigious festivals like Sundance and Cannes, tells the true story of a poor black Southerner, Frank Custer (Damien Leake), who migrates from the rural south to Chicago in the early 20th century to work in a slaughterhouse. One of the most important cinematic events taking place in Chicago this year is the Logan Center’s preview screening of the 4K restoration of The Killing Floor. The following interview I conducted with producer/writer Elsa Rassbach appeared at Time Out Chicago today:

This particular glass formed igneous rock was used by American Indians to create stunning jewelry with Apache Tears and was carved into sharpened tips on hunting weapons that were made to pierce. Thus, it’s quite hard to reach-and can only be quarried by enrolled Native Americans. One particular mine of Catlinite at Pipestone forms the second softest rock in the world often found in a layer just underneath the Sioux quartzite sediment-the second hardest rock in the world! This material takes on a reddish-brown color. That is, Calinite or Pipestone was a material used to carve the peace pipes of many American Indian tribes. Many know that various types of Mudstone were used to mix the clays of the American Indians, but this particular type held an even higher purpose. These highly prized sculptures were made for ceremonial purposes from the easy-to-carve Alabaster and used as power objects or mediators by the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. The softer stone Alabaster was a common material of the Zuni fetishes or small statuary carvings by the peoples of the Zuni tribe. It was also used alongside Alabaster in the Zuni tribe sculptures. It was said that when worn or carried, Azurite allows you to feel the presence of a guide and understand the meaning of the message spoken. The stone Azurite has always held mysterious sacred qualities, and was once used by some Native American tribes as an amulet to help the wearer contact a spirit guide. Another handy use for this particular stone was its ability to sharpen and sand tools, which provided a way to craft fine weapons from other materials. Some American Indians also created molds from Sandstone for silver-casting. In addition to Granite, Sandstone was also a popular rock used by tribes in the mortar and pestle design. White Pumice is a particular type of the stone that can be found commonly used in the pottery of various tribes. Various types of igneous rock were used by the Native Americans, and Pumice is one such rock that was ground down and used in the clay to mix pottery. Wild grains were crushed with this tool into flour, or long slabs of Granite were also used to roll dough to be cooked over the fire. These “grinding stones”-the mortar and pestle could be used for various reasons, such as grinding ingredients for cooking or mixing materials for building purposes. Rocks that formed large flat slabs were often used by the American Indians to make the mortar and pestle. For this reason, Turquoise was highly prized by various tribes and used to craft fine jewelry or talismans of beauty, spirituality and life-giving power for over 7,000 years. As the Indians rejoiced with the arrival of the rain, tears of joy mixed with this rain and fell to Mother Earth to create Turquoise-“the fallen skystone”. To some American Indian tribes, Turquoise was a legendary gift. Two derivatives of quartz, chert and flint stones are both microcrystalline quartz used in the tools and weapons (arrowheads, spear points) of the Native Americans. Rose Quartz was held in high value for its healing powers, and clear quartz was worn by some for good luck. Various types of Quartz were used by the American Indian tribes. Some Native American tribes thought Red Jasper increased one’s sensitivity to the Earth. It was once used as an offering during rain-making rituals and was thought to offer the wearer guidance when dowsing for water. Red Jasper was a common stone used by the American Indians for various ceremonial purposes. What made rocks and minerals so useful to American Indians was the natural hardness of rocks and special chemical properties of minerals. Some served decorative purposes such as hematite-that when grinded down-mixed in animal fat to form vibrant colors to be used in cave wall paintings. Sulfur was burned by the medicine man, flints were used as fire starters and arrowheads, and halite (salt) to tan animal hide and preserve foods. The lack of materials present created a resourceful people who turned to the rocks, minerals, plants and animals to fashion each thing needed. Without modern day plastics and advanced tool-making technologies, the tribes of Native American Indians had thought up a wide range of ways to make use of Rocks and Minerals that naturally occur on Earth. We at Rockology are grateful today for the Rocks and Minerals that made the first Thanksgiving possible. Would you guess that on the first Thanksgiving, the American Indians made use of Rocks and Minerals to set the scene for the feast? Without tools to till the field, grind the flour, and light the fire, the feast of Native Americans and pilgrims may not have commenced! The disease was first reported in Italy in 2004, was reported in the U.S. Plant-specific mildews Basil ĭowny mildew of basil caused by Peronospora belbahrii has been a huge problem for both commercial producers and home growers. Choosing resistant cultivars, in combination with other prevention and control measures, can help growers with high downy mildew pressure still produce a viable crop. Recent breeding efforts have produced resistant basil cultivars. In enclosed environments, like in the house or in a greenhouse, reducing the humidity will help as well. Watering from below, such as with a drip system, and improve air circulation through selective pruning. One way to control downy mildew is to eliminate moisture and humidity around the impacted plants. In Canada, a mixture of zoxamide and mancozeb was registered for control of the mildew under the trademark Gavel (fungicide) as early as 2008. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency has approved oxathiapiprolin for use against downy mildew. Systemic fungicides are labeled for use against cucurbit downy mildew, but are recommended only after diagnosis of this disease has been confirmed. Broad spectrum protectant fungicides such as chlorothalonil, mancozeb, and fixed copper are at least somewhat effective in protecting against downy mildew infection. When downy mildew does pose a threat, the removal and destruction of plants displaying symptoms is good practice.įungicides applied specifically for downy mildew control may be unnecessary. Therefore, planting early season varieties may further reduce the already minor threat posed by downy mildew. The pathogen tends to become established in late summer. Treatment and management Cultural options īecause the downy mildew pathogen does not overwinter in midwestern fields, crop rotations and tillage practices do not affect disease development. In disease-favorable conditions (cool nights with long dew periods), downy mildew will spread rapidly, destroying leaf tissue without affecting stems or petioles. As a result of numerous infectious sites, leaves might show a blighted appearance if the disease continues to spread. Small spores shaped like footballs can be observed among the mold with a 10x hand lens. Upon closer inspection, a purple-brown mold (see arrow) becomes apparent. The under surface of infected leaves appears watersoaked. As lesions mature, they expand rapidly and turn brown. They can also be distinguished by their sporadic yellow patch appearance. Initial symptoms include large, angular or blocky, yellow areas visible on the upper surface. Cucurbit downy mildew only affects leaves of cucurbit plants. Yield loss associated with downy mildew is most likely related to soft rots that occur after plant canopies collapse and sunburn occurs on fruit. It progresses northward with cucurbit production each spring. This pathogen does not produce survival structures in the northern states of the United States, and overwinters as live mildew colonies in Gulf Coast states. The prime example is Peronospora farinosa featured in NCBI-Taxonomy and HYP3. In commercial agriculture, they are a particular problem for growers of crucifers, grapes and vegetables that grow on vines. Downy mildews exclusively belong to the Peronosporaceae family. Example of downy mildew (left) along with powdery mildew on a grape leafĭowny mildew refers to any of several types of oomycete microbes that are obligate parasites of plants. Orange Hair After Color Oops Now it’s like a strawberry reddish blonde color, but O ops Extra Strength Hair Color Remover totally did WORK on box dye. It didn’t restore natural hair color, but it did take the insane red out of the artificial hair color. When I got out I immediately put on my deep conditioner and sat for another 20 minutes before rinsing one last time and then finally drying. It was actually clear the whole time, but I kept rinsing, shampooing, and rinsing. This is what is taking out that permanent hair color and no, the water wasn’t running red. I always thought I would love a 20-minute shower, but I got bored in like 7. The product is very watery and comes out QUICK, but I was able to work one box through my hair.ĭo not leave it on for more than 20 minutes and then, here is the kicker, you have to rinse and shampoo your hair for 20 full minutes. I have a lot of hair that needed color removal so I was really terrified it wasn’t going to cover my entire head. I use the Macadamia Hair Intense or if you want something more cost-effective, this Dove Restoration Mask.ģ) READ THE Color Oops INSTRUCTIONS FIRST! Basically, you mix two bottles, shake for 30 seconds and saturate your hair. It didn’t break my hair or do anything that I couldn’t handle, but you will need to condition it after, from the hair shaft right down to the ends. My pillowcase will be getting a bleach bath today.Ģ) Have a deep hair conditioner ready. The smell doesn’t just wash away with good clarifying shampoo either. If you are sensitive to really intense chemical smells, you may not like it. I honestly didn’t think that but I have spent hours in the salon breathing in permanent hair dye and remover so pretty much nothing phases me. A lot of people believe it smells like rotten eggs. The whole concept of this remover is that it breaks the bonds of the color molecules and allows you to wash and rinse the dye away from the strands.įew things to note if you are going to use Oops Hair Color Remover:ġ) It does stink. And under most circumstances, I would say “RUN, DON’T DO IT.”īut after a little research, I picked up some Oops Hair Color Remover, Extra Strength, and decided to try my luck. Normally, I would tell you this is a REALLY horrible idea. So last night I decided to strip the color from my hair with color oops extra strength hair color remover. Using Color Oops to Strip the Color From My HairĬolor Oops Hair Color Remover, Extra Strength I tried on dresses and the only color that looked remotely decent with this newly dyed hair of mine was blue. In all fairness, it looked just like the box, but after a day or two, I realized didn’t match my skin tone or ANY of my clothes. On my next visit to Walgreens, which was last Friday, I thought “Hmm, let me try something BRIGHTER, more RED than copper. I can handle copper pretty well so why not red?” It did fade to a pretty color but I really missed the bright glow of it. Here is the day of the dye and then 4 weeks after. It was super bright, but again, all good things come to an end and the artificial color eventually faded. But after 3 months of paying $120 to a salon every 4 weeks to keep up with my red, I did something I haven’t done in 10 years- I picked up a box of artificial dye.įirst, I used Feria Red Copper INTENSE. Hate your red? No problem, your red hates your red and it will go if you have the patience. Red washes out in weeks, sometimes even days after you put it in your hair. Highlighting from home is basically like lighting your checkbook on fire (do people have checkbooks anymore? I’m showing my age.) because of all the corrections you are likely gonna have to do when it goes horribly wrong.īut red- ok now red is a different story. I do a lot of highlights and that requires a hair person. Now, usually, I go to the salon to cover any gray hair and touch up my natural hair. And with all this knowledge about hair color and artificial pigment, I can tell you two definite things: Never, EVER do bleach over the counter, and red is actually pretty ok to do from a box. |
